What does one do in a networking situation when you want to break into a group and nobody invites you in?

A. This is quite a common occurrence and it happened to me only last week!  Practicing what I preach, I spotted one member of the group glance my way and I immediately went round to him and introduced myself.  He then introduced me to the rest of the group.  Note:  When you introduce a newcomer to the group, you introduce them to the closest two / three people and then ask the group members to introduce themselves.
