The Art of the “Pivot!”
Almost funny in its simplicity but detrimental to getting anywhere. Our politicians are masters of the game and it is definitely in the realm of diplomatic evasion. Watching interviews these days is like a blood sport in pursuit of ratings and/or political propaganda.
When I first heard the term “pivot” I had visions of a scene from a dark alley, where the good guy “pivoted” from an oncoming bullet and hid out in a Garbage Can…probably the best home for the pivot!
Now, the public is so used to politicians “pivoting” to avoid any controversial issue and answer by pointing to the opposing side: “See, what they did,” that they have sadly tuned out.
How refreshing would it be if a political contender actually said it like it is?
Is that diplomacy? Yes, it is a form of diplomacy in that it inspires trust in the person with the courage to be honest and stick to his/her principles as, sooner or later, their intent will be evident and will lose credibility if their message is cloaked in the “pivotal pot!”
Pivoting might have been effective initially, before people figure it out and it’s vaguely insulting to people who have access to the facts and find it disingenuous to say the least.
